Often referred to as the 'Vampire Deer', Chinese Water Deer are instantly recognisable by the prominent canine tusks carried by mature bucks instead of antlers. Habitat & Behaviour
Chinese Water Deer inhabit low-lying river valleys, wetlands, reed beds, rough grassland and arable farmland, where their exceptional eyesight and preference for open ground make them both challenging and rewarding quarry.
Unlike Britain's other deer species, Chinese Water Deer bucks do not grow antlers. Instead, they carry impressive canine tusks used during territorial disputes throughout the breeding season.
Their tendency to remain motionless in open fields before making a sudden escape often requires careful planning, patient observation and precise rifle shooting, making them one of Britain's most distinctive stalking experiences.
