The Fallow Deer is one of Britain's most recognisable and widely distributed deer species. Habitat & Behaviour

Thought to have been introduced to Britain by the Normans, Fallow Deer have become firmly established across much of England and remain closely associated with many of the country's great parklands, woodlands and historic estates.

Unlike Roe Deer, Fallow are highly social animals, typically living in herds that vary in size throughout the year. They inhabit mixed woodland, farmland and parkland, often emerging to graze at dawn and dusk.

The annual Fallow Rut, usually taking place during October, is one of the highlights of the stalking season. Mature bucks establish traditional rutting stands where they compete for breeding rights, their distinctive groaning calls echoing through the woodland and creating one of the most memorable spectacles in British deer stalking.

Fallow Deer occur in several recognised colour variations, including Common, Menil, White and Melanistic (Black), all of which may be encountered on the estates managed by Capreolus Club.

Open Seasons

Following changes to Scottish legislation introduced in 2023, there is no statutory close season for male deer in Scotland. Female deer remain protected by statutory close seasons. Deer should always be managed responsibly, ethically and in accordance with current legislation and recognised best practice.
