The Red Deer is Britain's largest native land mammal and one of the country's most iconic game species. Renowned for its impressive antlers, commanding presence and the unforgettable spectacle of the autumn rut, Red Deer stalking represents one of the finest sporting traditions in the British countryside.

Habitat & Behaviour

Red Deer favour a wide range of habitats, from the open hills and glens of the Scottish Highlands to ancient woodland, commercial forestry and mixed farmland throughout England.

For much of the year, stags and hinds live separately in single-sex groups before coming together during the autumn rut. Throughout September and October, mature stags establish territories and compete vigorously for breeding rights, their unmistakable roar echoing across the landscape in one of Britain's greatest wildlife spectacles.

As highly intelligent and wary animals, successful Red Deer stalking demands patience, careful observation, sound fieldcraft and accurate rifle shooting.

Open Seasons

Red Deer may be stalked throughout much of the year, with statutory open seasons differing between England & Wales and Scotland.

Following changes to Scottish legislation introduced in 2023, there is no statutory close season for male deer in Scotland. Female deer remain protected by statutory close seasons. Deer should always be managed responsibly, ethically and in accordance with current legislation and recognised best practice.
