The Roe Deer is Britain's native woodland deer and, for many, represents the very finest deer stalking available anywhere in the world. Elegant, alert and exceptionally challenging, Roe Deer demand patience, fieldcraft and accurate rifle shooting, rewarding successful stalkers with one of the most exhilarating sporting experiences the British countryside has to offer.

For many members, Roe Deer stalking reaches its peak during the famous Roe Rut, when normally cautious Roebucks become highly responsive to expertly executed calls, often providing unforgettable close-range encounters and some of the most exciting stalking of the entire season.

Habitat & Behaviour

Roe Deer are widely distributed throughout England and Scotland, favouring woodland edges, young plantations, farmland and mixed agricultural landscapes.

Unlike Red Deer, Roe are generally solitary or found in small family groups. Their secretive nature, excellent eyesight and acute awareness make them a fascinating and rewarding quarry species, requiring quiet movement, careful observation and a thorough understanding of their behaviour.

The annual Roe Rut, typically occurring during late July and early August, is regarded by many experienced stalkers as one of the highlights of the British sporting calendar.

Open Seasons

Following changes to Scottish legislation introduced in 2023, there is no statutory close season for male deer in Scotland. Female deer remain protected by statutory close seasons. Deer should always be managed responsibly, ethically and in accordance with current legislation and recognised best practice.
