The Sika Deer is widely regarded as one of Britain's most elusive and challenging deer species. Originally introduced from Japan during the nineteenth century, Sika have become established in several areas of Britain and are now recognised as one of the country's most sought-after quarry species. Their haunting whistles during the autumn rut and their remarkable ability to move silently through dense woodland have earned them a legendary reputation amongst experienced deer stalkers.

Habitat & Behaviour

Sika favour extensive woodland, forestry plantations, heathland and rough grazing, where their cautious nature and extraordinary senses make them particularly difficult to approach.

Unlike some of Britain's other deer species, mature Sika Stags are renowned for their intelligence and ability to detect even the slightest movement or sound. Success often depends upon meticulous planning, careful use of the wind and patient, deliberate stalking.

During the autumn rut, typically from late September through October, mature stags become highly vocal, communicating with their distinctive whistles and bugles, creating one of the most atmospheric experiences in British deer stalking.

Open Seasons

Following changes to Scottish legislation introduced in 2023, there is no statutory close season for male deer in Scotland. Female deer remain protected by statutory close seasons. Deer should always be managed responsibly, ethically and in accordance with current legislation and recognised best practice.
